About this work

A miner sits inside a timber-shored tunnel, wearing overalls, suspenders and a helmet fitted with a small lamp, holding a tool loosely in one hand. Mounted on the wooden support beside him is a metal-framed box housing a canary in its cage; lettered across the upper corner are the words 'MEMENTO MORI'.

Dense cross-hatching builds the grain of the pit props and the deep shadow of the tunnel, set against the miner's weathered, closely observed face and hands; the tonal contrast is heavy and somber. The caged bird beside the lamp gives the quiet scene an undertone of watchfulness and mortality.
